If a family member has had pancreatic cancer should I have any screening?

This is a controversial question and there is no consensus. I feel that individuals with a family history of pancreatic cancer should be seen at a medical center that specializes in pancreatic cancer for an evaluation. Patients may then undergo a genetic evaluation by a cancer geneticist to determine if their family history is consistent with a genetic syndrome and they should undergo genetic testing.

High risk patients may also be referred to a gastroenterologist for endoscopic ultrasound and blood tests for surveillance. Some larger medical centers may have a tumor registry such as the Jefferson Pancreas Tumor Registry.
