About Substance Abuse Programs

For almost 40 years, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals' Substance Abuse Programs have helped thousands of individuals battle and conquer addiction. Housed in Jefferson's Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, our physicians approach addiction as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual disease that afffects each person and their families on a number of different levels: physical and mental health, emotional well-being, social relationships and spiritual connectedness.

We work with patients who are struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, heroin dependency, cocaine addiction and prescription medication abuse, and move toward recovery. We offer three separate outpatient programs that provide a different focus of care depending upon your specific needs.

Jefferson Outreach Program

An outpatient treatment program, Outreach offers therapeutic and psychiatric services for individuals with alcohol abuse, nonopioid drug abuse and combined substance abuse and mental health problems (co-occurring disorders). Assessments can be arranged within 24 to 48 hours of referral. The Program is accessible via public transportation.

Jefferson Intensive Substance Abuse Treatment Program

This 12-to-16-week intensive outpatient treatment program serves people who abuse cocaine, alcohol and other substances (amphetamines, marijuana, benzodiazepines, etc.) as well as for those with co-occurring disorders. Patients attend the Program three half-days per week and participate in group therapy, individual therapy and structured relapse prevention-oriented educational activities.

The 9-hour-per-week Program is designed for those not requiring hospitalization or residential services but who need more than once-weekly outpatient psychotherapy as well as people moving out of detoxification, inpatient care or rehabilitation facilities. There is no waiting list and the location is convenient for bus and auto routes.

• Psychiatric and medical assessment
• Individual therapy
• On-site 12-step meetings
• HIV/AIDS prevention workshops, HIV/AIDS testing and pre- and posttest counseling
• Structured relapse prevention-oriented activity groups
• Referral services
• After-care groups

Thomas Jefferson University's Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation Program

Jefferson's NARP is an outpatient methadone treatment program for opiate-dependent individuals. Therapeutic and psychiatric services are provided for all patients in the Program.
 
The Program is accessible via public transportation. Admissions are arranged in a timely fashion.

• Methadone monitoring, maintenance and ambulatory detoxification
• Psychotropic medication management as needed
• Referrals for medical care
• Individual and group psychotherapies
• Family and couples therapy
• Narcotics and Methadone Anonymous 12 step meetings on-site
• HIV/AIDS testing and pre- and post-test counseling
• Community education/information
