Whether you are at risk or have suffered a stroke, you know that every second counts. Where you get your care and how quickly you get the right care can make all the difference in your outcome.
If you should need stroke care, the Jefferson Acute Stroke Center is one of the most advanced and acclaimed centers in the U.S. for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research of stroke. It's also the largest facility dedicated to the care of acute stroke in the Delaware Valley.
In the sudden event of a stroke, call 911 immediately.
Patients presenting with possible stroke symptoms are assessed immediately to identify the nature of the stroke – hemorrhagic or ischemic. Utilizing diagnostics including CTA/CT perfusion imaging, our surgeons perform intra-arterial or mechanical thrombolysis with advanced catheter-based clot retrieval devices, including a new system that uses suction to remove the bolus instead of extracting it mechanically. These procedures have proven effective when applied within eight hours of stroke onset.
In ischemic stroke, CT perfusion outlines the territory of the penumbra and identifies brain tissue with reversible ischemia, which may allow treatment of patients as long as 24 hours after first symptoms occur.
At Jefferson, our neurologic care extends beyond the surgical suite. In our advanced Neuro-intensive Care Unit, subspecialists including neuro-intensivists, neurosurgeons and hospitalists manage all aspects of specialized care. The Unit features a portal CT scanner, continuous EEG, cardiac and respiratory monitoring and therapeutic hypothermia in addition to the comprehensive resources offered by a university hospital.

Lifesaving Treatment of Stroke
Because time is of the essence in diagnosing and treating stroke, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience has launched Jefferson Expert Teleconsulting (JET), the region's first university-based high-tech mobile robotic teleconsulting system. JET allows Jefferson neuroscience specialists to evaluate time-sensitive neurovascular diseases, most notably stroke, in real time and without delay. With JET, your community hospital physician can request an immediate consultation with one of our neuroscience specialists.
Jefferson neurologists have pioneered new treatments for stroke and are experienced in using the latest minimally invasive treatment procedures, such as endovascular coiling and Wingspan™ Stent System, which can prevent a stroke by opening potentially life-threatening clogged arteries in the brain.
Our neurosurgeons have the skill and experience necessary to successfully perform all stroke treatments to ensure the optimal outcome for each patient. Our state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest technologies and our access to clinical trials and ground-breaking research ensures that we can deliver the best possible care.
In addition, we are supported by a superb team of neuro-intensivists, therapists, nurses, neurophysiologists, physiatrists and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the care of stroke patients.
