How is lymphedema treated?
There is no cure for lymphedema however it is possible to manage through Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). CDT consists of four treatment segments: Manual lymph drainage (MLD), Compression, Skin/nail care and Exercise.
MLD is a gentle technique used to reroute the lymph fluid by mild skin stretching to assist with draining fluid into the veins and back into circulation.
Compression is achieved through bandages applied during treatments or compression garments worn daily.
Skin/nail care education helps to prevent infections.
Exercise that is performed when wearing compression enhances the muscles’ ability to move fluid back into circulation.
