The total number of treatments depends upon many variables. The treatments may be as few as 10 given over one week (2 treatments a day), or up to 33-35 treatments given once a day over 6-1/2-7 weeks. The average length of treatment is 3 1/2 to 6 weeks.
The length of the treatment session is about 15-30 minutes, although the time in the department is typically longer as patients arrive early to check in, and get dressed in a hospital gown for the treatments. After the treatment is completed, the patient returns to the dressing rooms to change, then they can leave. Once a week, they will also have a visit with their radiation oncologist.
