Triple negative breast cancer is a subtype of breast cancer that is negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and a protein called Her2neu.  It is a type of breast cancer that is particularly common in African-American patients as well as often seen with a type of hereditary breast cancer associated with the BRCA1 mutation.  However, we also see many cases of triple negative breast cancer that do not fall within these two groups of patients.  There is a huge research effort ongoing looking at this type of breast cancer to better understand why it develops, and to investigate new types of drugs that may be more effective treatment options.
