Are there alternative treatments available for prostate cancer?

There are a large number of treatment options available for prostate cancer. The most frequently used strategies include surgery, external beam radiation therapy, brachytherapy and hormonal therapy.
Recently, two newer external beam radiation therapy options have become increasingly available: proton beam therapy and shorter course treatments with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). It is not yet clear if there are any advantages of these approaches for patients with prostate cancer, so many patients who choose to receive proton beam therapy or SBRT will be offered treatment on clinical trials.
