If you should need stroke care, The Jefferson Acute Stroke Center is one of the most advanced and acclaimed centers in the U.S. for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research of stroke. It's also the largest facility dedicated to the care of acute stroke in the Delaware Valley.
Patients presenting with possible stroke symptoms are assessed immediately to identify the nature of the stoke - hemorrhagic or ischemic. Utilizing diagnostics including CTA/CT perfusion imaging, our surgeons perform intra-arterial or mechanical thrombolysis with advanced catheter-based clot retrieval devices. These procedures have proven effective when applied within eight hours of stroke onset.
Our approach to treating the sudden onset of stroke extends to our emergency medical staff, whose quick response and expertise can increase your chances of the best possible recovery by up to 50 percent. We also have an Acute Stroke Unit – a 12-bed intermediate critical care unit for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Jefferson neurologists have pioneered new treatments for stroke and are experienced in using the latest minimally invasive treatment procedures, such as endovascular coiling and Wingspan™ Stent System, which can prevent a stroke by opening potentially life-threatening clogged arteries in the brain.
Our Stroke Center physicians are also working with Jefferson cardiologists to investigate new prevention strategies and treatments for acute stroke. This includes the development of new catheterization techniques that can help prevent recurrence of stroke in some patients.
