Emergency Department

Stroke Center
In diagnosing and treating patients suffering stroke, the Emergency Department taps into the resources of Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience’s Stroke Center. The Center is one of the most advanced centers in the United States for the diagnosis, management, prevention and research of stroke. It is also the largest facility dedicated to the care of acute stroke in the greater Delaware Valley.

With a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care, the Stroke Center incorporates the following based on the needs of each patient:

  • The expertise of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s extensive medical staff of leading specialists in various disciplines
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including CT scan and MRI
  • Drug therapies, including timely interventions of blood clot-dissolving medications
  • A wide range of neurosurgical options – many of which are noninvasive or minimally invasive – depending on the needs of the individual treatment
  • Outstanding rehabilitative care
  • A dedicated stroke team and specialized neurointensive care units

In addition, the Stroke Center offers a full complement of innovative treatment procedures – including Wingspan™ Stent System (a new tube designed and inserted to open potentially life-threatening clogged arteries in the brain, preventing a stroke); “coiling” of aneurysms (snaking of tiny platinum coils through a catheter in the femoral artery and into the aneurysm in order to stabilize the aneurysm and prevent any rupturing, which could result in stroke or even death); and removal of blood clots using the latest technological devices.

In a true medical emergency, always go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
