Sexual Assault Center
Jefferson operates one of two sexual assault units designated by the City of Philadelphia. The center has a longstanding history
of providing comprehensive, compassionate care to victims of rape and sexual assault. In fact, each year the Sexual Assault
Center treats over 300 victims who have been brought to the Emergency Department from various parts of Philadelphia.
Led by Ralph Riviello, MD, the center is staffed by physicians and over 15 Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (S.A.N.E.) who have completed national training
for treating and supporting victims of sexual assault. The center provides a single point of access for medical care, evaluation,
evidence collection and emergency contraception for victims – along with a sensitive, compassionate approach to care.
The Sexual Assault Center provides a full spectrum of care and support for victims of rape and sexual assault, including:
- Medical care for injuries
- Documentation for legal purposes
- Prevention and treatment of possible sexually transmitted diseases
- Prevention and help for possible pregnancy
- Follow-up medical care
- Counseling to address emotional trauma
The center also works with community organizations dedicated to supporting victims and preventing sexual assault.
In a true medical emergency, always go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
