Thomas Jefferson Hospital has had a long tradition of outstanding success in the treatment of patients with all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. Thomas Jefferson Hospital is the longest continuously active Liver Transplantation program in the Philadelphia area. The Liver Transplant Program began in 1984. The surgical team is headed by Ignazio Marino, MD, FACS. Two full-time hepatologists are available for consultative services for all liver disorders and for the initial evaluation and management of patients awaiting liver transplant. The program is actively involved in clinical research. Patients receive comprehensive personalized care from our physicians and the entire professional staff which includes our nurse coordinators, social workers, nutritionists and pharmacists. Referring physicians are regularly kept informed of their patients' progress and are encouraged to actively participate in their patients' care before and after liver transplant and during treatment for underlying liver disease.
