About Jefferson’s Center for Vascular Diseases

Vascular diseases and thrombotic disorders are extremely common, affecting people of all ages. In many cases, these diseases and disorders are highly treatable or even preventable. Through increased awareness – followed by the right clinical care – patients can effectively manage or treat these conditions.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has established the Center for Vascular Diseases to help meet the clinical and educational needs of patients and clinicians. Led by my Internal Medicine team, the center includes Jefferson’s Divisions of Cardiology, Cardiovascular/Interventional Radiology (CVIR) and Vascular Surgery, as well as the Department of Neurosurgery.

For patients, the center provides a focal point for communication and care delivery. After an initial consultation, we become each patient’s personal advocate. Since diagnosing and treating or managing these diseases and disorders often requires more than one medical specialty, we help schedule appointments with specialists at Jefferson. Along the way, we serve as a single point of contact for any questions or concerns that may arise. And we follow up with patients to help ensure that needs and expectations are being met.

For clinicians– including physicians, nurses and pharmacists – we provide an array of specialized educational resources. We participate in clinical studies to help advance knowledge and treatment of vascular diseases and clinical disorders. We also contribute to and benefit from translational research under way at the Eugene Feiner Laboratory for Vascular Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis. (Patients with artherosclerosis have arteries that are hardened and narrowed due to the gradual build-up of plaque on the inner walls. Patients with thrombosis have blood clots in their veins or arteries.)

If you or someone you care about fit one or more of the characteristics we’ve identified on this website – or if you’re a clinician with a patient who fits the profile – please reach out to Jefferson’s Center for Vascular Diseases.

Sincerely,
Dr. Geno J. Merli
