EducationPatient Education
Education and awareness are among the most important tools when it comes to preventing and treating or managing vascular diseases.
If you or someone you care about is dealing with vascular disease, please take advantage of the resources available through
the Center for Vascular Diseases:
Support Groups
Jefferson’s Center for Vascular Diseases routinely sponsors support groups for patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary
embolism and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Led by our specially trained nurse-practitioners and pharmacists, these groups
provide valuable information about lifestyle changes you can make and upcoming clinical studies you may wish to participate
in. They also give patients an opportunity to interact with others who are facing similar challenges.
In addition to the groups described above, the center will form, on an as-needed basis, specialty support groups for pregnant
women and/or patients who are facing vascular disease and other medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease.

Clinical Education
The Program for Vascular Diseases is committed to delivering clinical education to physicians, nurses and pharmacists. As
part of the commitment, we provide several levels of clinical education.
The center offers continuing education programs to healthcare professionals in the area of thrombotic management and anticoagulation
therapy. We offer on-site programs for healthcare professionals interested in implementing their own antithrombotic management
programs at their institutions.
In addition, our practitioners educate pharmacy, nursing and medical students through didactic programs at Thomas Jefferson
University. We provide clinical sites for pharmacy students from University of the Sciences and Temple University. Over a
five-week period, these students participate in clinical experiential rotations in the areas of internal medicine and anticoagulation.
Our practitioners also proactively educate the house staff at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. We offer a clinical experiential
rotation with the Jefferson Antithrombotic Therapy Service. We also work closely with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
to develop guidelines for anticoagulation therapy at our institution.
