Helicopter Transport
Through a partnership with Air Methods, Inc. – the world’s largest provider of air medical transport services – JeffSTAT provides
helicopter transport services to high-acuity patients who need rapid transportation for tertiary care.
JeffSTAT uses twin-engine, EC135 helicopters that can accommodate two patients and fly at speeds of up to 150 mph. These helicopters
are equipped with the latest aviation technology, such as weather radar and terrain avoidance systems, and Outerlink™ real
time GPS tracking systems. Based at the Sterling Aviation Heliport on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and
at Central Montgomery Medical Center in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, the helicopters can respond rapidly to inter-facility and
scene transport requests in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The helicopters are dispatched and tracked by LifeCom,
a remote communications center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Specialty/Critical Care Transport
High-acuity patients requiring specialized medical equipment and therapies – such as hemodynamic monitoring, fetal monitoring,
mechanical ventilation and intravenous medication therapy – mandate the presence of a specialty/critical care transport team.
Examples include a stroke patient receiving thrombolytic therapy, an acute spinal cord injury patient receiving steroids and
a patient with a cerebral hemorrhage who has an ICP drain and arterial line in place.

The JeffSTAT specialty/critical care team includes a registered nurse (R.N.) and an emergency medical technician–paramedic
(EMT-P) – both of whom provide care to the patient – and an emergency medical technician–basic (EMT-B) who drives the ambulance.

Medical equipment on the specialty/critical care transport ambulance includes:
- Zoll CCT cardiac monitor/defibrillator/external transcutaneous pacer with capnography and invasive monitoring capabilities
- Pulmonedic mechanical ventilator
- IVAC Minimed System III infusion pumps
- Philips fetal heart monitor
- Intubation and airway management equipment
- Intravenous access equipment and fluids
- Medications
- Spinal immobilization equipment
- Pediatric and neonatal resuscitation equipment
- Radio equipment for contact with physicians at the hospital
- Ventricular assist devices and intraaortic balloon pumps are added to the ambulance as necessary
- Isolettes and nitric oxide, as necessary
- Medtronic Dual Chamber Transvenous Pacemaker
Advanced Life Support (ALS)
JeffSTAT’s ALS transport team serves patients of moderate acuity who need telemetry monitoring, intravenous medications or
intravenous fluids. Examples include an asthmatic patient experiencing dyspnea who is receiving continuous mini-nebulizer
treatments, a pediatric patient with a fever and dehydration receiving intravenous fluids, and a patient receiving IV nitroglycerine
and heparin who is being transported for a cardiac catheterization. The ALS transport team includes a Pennsylvania-certified
paramedic and an emergency medical technician–basic (EMT-B) who drives the vehicle.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
A basic life support (BLS) transport is a scheduled non-emergency transport between a hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation
facility, physician’s office, patient’s residence or outpatient facility and another location. Examples include a non-ambulatory
patient being discharged from the hospital to a private residence, a non-ambulatory patient being transported from a rehabilitation
facility to outpatient radiology for x-rays, or a patient with a suspected hip fracture who is being admitted directly to
the emergency department. The BLS crew includes two emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
Paratransit Services
Paratransit van transportation is available for patients who are wheelchair-bound or who are able to walk but require assistance
when moving. JeffSTAT’s paratransit vans provide non-emergency transportation between hospitals, outpatient facilities operated
by hospitals, physicians’ offices and patients’ private residences. Equipped with a wheelchair lift, the paratransit van is
capable of accommodating several passengers at one time. Each van is staffed by a paratransit driver.
Special Event Emergency Medical Services
JeffSTAT provides emergency medical services coverage at major sporting events, community activities and conventions in the
Delaware Valley. ALS and BLS crews stand by at these events and provide emergency care to event participants or spectators.
JeffSTAT is able to provide medical support for events of almost any size.
On-Campus Emergency
The on-campus emergency transport team provides emergency medical services coverage to the campuses of Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University. When summoned for an emergency call, the team responds to the scene, assesses the
patient, provides emergency care and stabilization and then transports the patient to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s
Emergency Department for evaluation by a physician. The ambulance is staffed by a registered nurse or paramedic and an emergency
medical technician–basic (EMT-B) who drives the vehicle. The on-campus emergency transport team responds to emergency calls
24 hours a day. To report a medical emergency on the Jefferson campus, dial 811 from any campus phone.
