Additional information

Jefferson Hospital’s Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center at the Jefferson Heart Institute serves the rapidly increasing volume of patients who have congestive heart failure. Nationwide, fewer donor organs are available, increasing numbers of patients wait for organs, and waits for transplant are longer. Sophisticated technology available at Jefferson’s state-of-the-art center supports patients with end-stage heart failure.

The Center provides aggressive, tailored programs for patients in heart failure and serves as a consultant to primary care physicians and cardiologists. To improve cardiac function and quality of life, Jefferson offers a full range of medical and surgical options, including promising investigational treatments. In fact, Jefferson is participating in seven multi-center trials in heart failure and transplant.

In cooperation with Jefferson’s Center for Translational Medicine, researchers and clinicians at the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center are also involved in several National Institutes of Health and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-funded trials to develop genetic marker and receptor profiles to screen patients and populations at risk for congestive heart failure.

For patients’ convenience, Jefferson’s Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center offers care in Center City Philadelphia and several satellite locations including Northeast Philadelphia and Voorhees, NJ. The Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center works in conjunction with members of the Electrophysiology section at the Jefferson Heart Institute to offer patients in heart failure the advantage of “one-stop shopping” in diagnosing and treating cardiac rhythm disorders.

A last resort, cardiac transplantation is the only option for some patients. To date, thanks to the generous commitment of organ donors, 11 patients, including, most recently, John McAroy, have received transplanted hearts in procedures performed by Jefferson’s expert team.
