Ministry of Caring

The Department of Pastoral Care at Methodist Hospital reminds patients and families that religious and emotional support is offered ‘round the clock by Methodist Hospital’s Chaplain and more than 50 chaplain assistant volunteers.

Pastoral Care Services aid families not only during times of crisis, but also during times of joy, offering respect, compassion, and caring. They listen, and offer a calm presence, to support families who are making emotional and spiritual decisions.

Pastoral Care Services are available at Methodist Hospital and at the Methodist Hospital Nursing Center, to patients and families of all denominations.

Chaplains minister to patients at a critical time in their lives. Often patients are very vulnerable and open to receiving God’s love. Many patients understand their need for God for the very first time.

At Methodist Hospital, chaplain assistants volunteer one day or one night a month. Chaplain assistants have all types of backgrounds, and include both lay and clergy volunteers. All are working overtime to help patients and families create beautiful memories during a time that can otherwise be sad and stressful.

To become a chaplain assistant, volunteers attend six classes and participate in three apprenticeships, during which they build confidence and learn to share God’s love during times of suffering and joy. For more information on becoming a chaplain assistant, call Reverend Christy Meneely, Director of Pastoral Care Services, at 215-952-9048.
