Patients, Families and Staff Join in Traditional
Wine Making at Methodist Hospital Nursing Center
What: Patients, their families and staff members of
the Methodist Hospital Nursing Center of the Methodist Hospital
Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital will celebrate
the wine-making season in South Philadelphia as they use modern
equipment to begin the wine-making process. Great photo opportunity
as patients and their families learn about this tradition,
enjoy Italian music and partake in a feast straight from the
Italian Market. When: Sunday, September 30, 2 to 4 p.m., Grape
pressing will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Where: Methodist Hospital Nursing Center, Fourth and
Porter Streets, South Philadelphia
Background: The months of September and October are
traditional wine-making times in South Philadelphia. And since
nothing goes better with wine than a celebration, the staff
of the 120-bed long-term care and 60-bed sub-acute rehabilitation
units of Methodist Hospital decided to provide residents with
the opportunity to participate in the tradition.
Dominic Santamaria, a respiratory therapist at the hospital,
and South Philadelphia native who grew up making wine with
his family, will demonstrate modern wine-making techniques
adapted to this old tradition. He will demonstrate grape pressing
and then, using juice from already-pressed grapes, will store
the liquids in what looks like a big glass jug (a modern version
of a wood barrel). Although the jug appears to be airtight,
the gasses that are formed by fermentation are able to escapethus
forming wine! He will be assisted by Michael Curry, Nursing
Center administrator.
The wine that is begun on Sunday will be ready for drinking
before Christmas, when the staff plans another celebration.
Patients, their families and staff members will all participate
in the festivities, which will include a sumptuous buffet
of Italian meats, cheeses, olives and bread.
