St. Agnes Chief Nursing Officer Mary Beth Edger Named Vice President, Ambulatory Services, Methodist Hospital

Mary Beth Edger, M.S., R.N., CNA, has been named vice president, Ambulatory Services, at the Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She was formerly vice president, Patient Services/Chief Nursing Officer at St. Agnes Medical Center. On June 15, Methodist Hospital and St. Agnes Medical Center completed an agreement that will redefine health care delivery in South Philadelphia. Methodist Hospital assumed complete responsibility for managing and operating all of St. Agnes’ short-term acute care services. St. Agnes was renamed the St. Agnes Continuing Care Center focusing on providing programs and services for patients with long-term medical conditions or chronic illnesses.

In her new capacity, Ms. Edger will be initially responsible for Methodist

Hospital’s acute care services that will be temporarily located at St. Agnes before moving to the expanded Methodist Hospital. Methodist will operate a second Emergency Department and additional patient beds at St. Agnes called “Methodist Hospital at St. Agnes.”

“Mary Beth Edger’s administrative skills both as a nurse executive and a leader make her ideal to take this important position,” says James Robinson, chief administrative officer, Methodist Hospital. “She will help to ensure that our transition will be a seamless one for our patients.”

Ms. Edger joins Methodist from St. Agnes Medical Center where, since 1997, she was vice president, Patient Services/Chief Nursing Officer. She joined St. Agnes in 1995 as director of Nursing from Nazareth Hospital where she began in 1978 as a staff nurse. When she left Nazareth in 1995, she was director of Nursing.

Ms. Edger received a bachelor of science in nursing degree in 1978 from Holy Family University and a master of science in health administration in 1986 from St. Joseph’s University. She received a post master’s certificate in Nursing Administration in 1989 from Villanova University.

In 2001, she was named a Johnson & Johnson Wharton Fellow for Nurse Executives at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School.

Ms. Edger is involved in several professional organizations including the Southeastern Pennsylvania Organization of Nursing Leaders. She is a board member of the Burn Foundation as well as the LIFE Center where she is also a member of the LIFE Plan Advisory Committee.
