Date and Time:
Thursday, February 24
3:30 p.m.

Place:
Methodist Hospital
2301 South Broad Street (corner of Wolf Street)

Personnel:
City Council President Anna Verna
City Councilman James Kenney
Thomas J. Lewis, president and CEO, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
James Robinson, chief administrative officer, Methodist Hospital

Background: Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is completing the last legs of its expansion and renovation—as part of its ongoing commitment to provide the best health care to the South Philadelphia community. A brand new 24-private-room general medical-surgical floor will be unveiled at the ceremony. Each patient room has its own shower, an exterior window and ambient lighting.

Another highlight of this newly constructed floor is 24-hour-a-day light sconces along the hallways. At night, as patients sleep, the overhead hallway lights will be lowered—and the sconces will provide most of the light—to offer a restful, more quiet nighttime environment that is often not available in a hospital.

This is the culmination of a remarkable top-to-bottom expansion and renovation of facilities and patient rooms at Methodist Hospital. In addition to the new general medical-surgical floor, new features include:

  • Emergency Department has expanded to 25 beds,
  • A new 12-bed medical intensive care unit,
  • The Women’s Diagnostic Center, offering mammogram, dexascan and ultrasound,
  • Shoulder and Elbow Center for orthopaedic care.
Methodist Hospital has been meeting the health-care needs of South Philadelphia since it opened in 1892. It became a division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1996.
