The Nephrology Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital offers comprehensive care for patients with chronic and acute
renal disorders, nephrolithiasis, diabetic nephropathy, renal failure, secondary and essential hypertension, complications
of pregnancy, as well as dialysis care and transplantation services.
Inpatient care is provided in our brand new Acute Dialysis Unit-4290 Gibbon Building. Outpatient care is provided at our hemo-
and peritoneal dialysis clinics, transplant clinic, and the outpatient/ambulatory renal clinic. Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital has the largest hospital-owned dialysis unit in the city.
Our transplant service performs 70 to 100 renal transplants per year. The Nephrology Division, under the direction of Drs.
Burke and Francos, plays a much larger role overall in transplantation compared with most centers. The Division holds weekly
meetings to evaluate transplant candidates based upon medical testing, psychological evaluation, and the discussion of the
benefits and risks of transplantation. The division also plays an active role with the post-transplant patient supervising
medication needs. With many new transplants being done yearly, the patient population continues to increase.
