The Intermediate Dialysis Unit at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital currently cares for 120 chronic hemodialysis and 25 peritoneal dialysis patients, offering the best in state-of-the-art dialysis care. During the past two years, new HD machines have been purchaced as well as a dialysis software package to improve patient care. Synthetic dialyzers (no reuse), high blood flow and conventional dialysis time (usually 4 hours), are used to achieve excellent adequacy of dialysis.

The care of patients with End Stage Renal Disease is approached in a multidisciplinary fashion, with the active involvement of nephrologists, nurses, dieticians, and social workers. The standardized mortality rate remains low (0.68), with a gross annual mortality of only 14.4percent. The dialysis unit has been chosen as a center for excellence by ESRD Network 4.
