The Neuromuscular Service of the Department of Neurology includes the Electromyography laboratory and the Neuromuscular Consult Service. The Neuromuscular Consult Service provides diagnosis and treatment for patients with diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, muscles and the neuromuscular junction. Typical patients include those with amyotropic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, hereditary neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, inflammatory myopathies, muscular dystrophies, and metabolic and mitochondrial myopathies.

The Electromyography Laboratory performs nerve condition studies, electromyography, single-fiber EMG, motor unit analysis and advanced quantitative electromyographic testing; portable equipment permits testing throughout the hospital. Muscle biopsy evaluations, carried out by neuropathology utilizing special histochemical and electron microscopy techniques, may be integrated with neuromuscular consultations.
