Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Treatments

Physicians determine specific treatments for Alzheimer’s disease based on the affected person’s:

  • Age, overall health and medical history
  • Disease severity
  • Tolerance for specific medications, procedures or therapies
  • Expectations for the course of the disease
  • Individual/Family preferences

New research findings give reason for hope, and several drugs are being studied in clinical trials to determine if they can slow the progress of the disease or improve memory.

There are some medications available to assist in managing some of the most troubling symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, including depression, behavioral disturbance and sleeplessness.

In managing the disease, physical exercise and social activity are important, as are proper nutrition, health maintenance, and a calm and well-structured environment.

Memory loss and dementia are best treated by first identifying possible medical causes – most commonly Alzheimer’s disease, followed by cardiovascular disease and Parkinson’s disease. This first requires an expert assessment. Treatment is varied and may include medication, counseling or special programs.

Also, counseling can help both patient and family cope better with the illness. In some cases individuals benefit from our acute inpatient treatment program which has a separate dementia unit.

Jefferson is currently conducting a study providing in-home services to people with dementia and their caregivers. Please call 215-503-2897 for more information.
