Frequently Asked Questions

In the realm of functional neurosurgery, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience currently offers three primary treatments:

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) – For this innovative procedure, our neurosurgeons use stereotactic technology to implant a 1.27 mm electrode into a deep brain structure through a 14 mm hole. In preparation for this surgery, extensive imaging studies are completed and analyzed to plan for proper placement of the device. Following surgery, one of our neurologists specializing in movement disorders works with the patient to program the device for maximum effectiveness. The programming typically requires adjustments over time, but eventually helps many patients with medically refractory Parkinson’s disease, as well as tremor and dystonia.

Spinal cord stimulation and pumps – For patients who have suffered spinal cord injury or who have multiple sclerosis, spasticity is a common condition. Leveraging Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience’s two decades of experience in spinal cord stimulation, the Center for Functional Neurosurgery now also implants pumps in the spinal cord. Because medications for spasticity can be unreliable and difficult to absorb, this direct infusion is often a more reliable means of controlling the condition.

Epilepsy surgery – The Center for Functional Neurosurgery routinely performs surgery on individuals who suffer from epilepsy. For this procedure, electrodes are placed in the brain or on the vagus nerve to modulate the electrical disturbances. (Vagal nerve stimulation has been performed at Jefferson for over a decade.) Once the disturbed areas are identified, they are either removed or treated with permanent electrodes to help modulate the brain’s electrical functioning. In addition to Functional Neurosurgery, Jefferson surgeons perform approximately 100 surgical procedures a year for epilepsy.

Surgical trials – The Center for Functional Neurosurgery is at the very forefront of emerging therapies. Thus, our patients have access to clinical trials for innovative therapies and new indications, or uses, of existing therapies.
