Taking care of baby:
- If your seizures result in falls, sit on the floor or in secure areas when feeding baby and have pillows next to you.
- Change diapers on the floor or secure baby on changing table with a strap.
- Never bathe the baby alone, but you can do it with someone else in the room.
- Never hold the baby while cooking. Use a nearby infant seat or stroller.
- Do not use the infant carrier that is strapped to your chest or back.
- Don’t forget the usual safety precautions: all electrical plugs should be covered, drawers and cabinets need safety locks,
all medications need to be secure, all cleaning solutions, etc need to be put away. Turn down hot water heater to <140 degrees.
Taking care of mom:
After the birth of your child, life is exciting and full of stress! This may place you at risk for increased seizures. Reduce
your risk by getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and taking your medicines. Medicine levels change after pregnancy,
so you need to have levels checked.
Teaching your child about seizures:
As your child gets older, they may see you have a seizure. Provide a careful explanation. Use correct words-seizure not spells,
attacks. Talk about how seizures may be frightening and discuss your child’s fears. When they are able, teach them how to
help during a seizure. There are children’s books about seizures. One of our favorites is “Dotty the Dalmation has epilepsy”.
