An estimated 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep problem, and for 60 percent of those, it’s a chronic disorder. And yet,
many sleep disorders go undiagnosed, which can lead to diminished quality of life and, in some cases, serious health problems.
Today, there are more than 100 definable sleep disorders. The Jefferson Sleep Disorders Center can treat many of those disorders
and most commonly helps patients suffering from:
- Sleep apnea syndrome and other sleep-related breathing disorders
- Narcolepsy and other hypersomnias
- Sleep-related movement disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, sleep-related leg cramps
and bruxism (“tooth grinding”)
- Insomnia
- Medical, psychiatric and neurological disorders that cause sleep disturbances, such as gastroesophageal reflux, nocturnal
angina, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, major depression, post-stroke syndrome,
nocturnal headaches, parkinsonism and medication-induced sleep disorders
- Circadian rhythm disorders, such as shift work sleep disorder, jet lag, advanced and delayed sleep phase syndrome, and others
- Parasomnias, such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep terror, nightmare disorder, sleep-related eating disorder and REM
sleep behavior disorder
The Center also diagnoses and treats:
- Childhood sleep disorders – including obstructive sleep apnea of childhood, sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder, behavioral
insomnia of childhood and sleep enuresis (bedwetting)
- Sleep disorders in women – including insomnia and hypersomnia of pregnancy, premenstrual dysphoric mood disorder and perimenopausal sleep disturbances.
- Sleep disorders in the elderly – including insomnia, hypersomnia and parasomnias, among others
- Seasonal affective disorder
