DATE: Saturday, March 6

TIME: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

GUEST SPEAKER: Michael J. O’Connor, M.D., Professor of Neurosurgery, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University

BACKGROUND: The reunion is being sponsored by the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

As an internationally recognized Center of Excellence, the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center takes a broad approach to treating people with seizures. Care provided at the Center includes thorough diagnostic services to address how epilepsy is affecting one’s life as well as to determine cognitive symptoms. Patients have access to renowned neurologists, neurophysiologists and neurosurgeons who work together to improve the quality of life for both patients and families.

The Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is currently participating in a landmark clinical research study to evaluate two standard therapies for treating epilepsy to compare the ability of each to eliminate seizures and side effects as soon as possible, and to improve quality of life.

The Early Randomized Surgical Epilepsy Trial (ERSET), which is sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a part of the National Institutes of Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will compare treatment with medications or surgery shortly after seizures become uncontrolled to determine which is more effective. The Jefferson Epilepsy Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is one of the 19 medical centers nationwide participating in the study.
