A host of nationally renowned experts on Alzheimer’s disease will try to demystify the complex illness for the public at large, and share the progress they are making in combating the disease, at a rare free public forum at Thomas Jefferson University.

The morning-long program is being hosted by the Farber Institute for Neurosciences of Thomas Jefferson University, in cooperation with the Rotary Clubs of North and South Carolina and Georgia. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to noon,

The forum comes at the close of the 9th International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ICAD) being held in Philadelphia and presented by the Alzheimer’s Association.

The experts from around the country, including Sam Gandy, M.D., Ph.D, director of the Farber Institute, professor of neurology, and biochemistry and molecular pharmacology, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, will discuss how Alzheimer’s affects the brain, allowing the public to better understand what Alzheimer’s is and how it differs from other forms of dementia.

The specialists will also share the highlights that were presented at the international conference about progress in studying vaccines and therapies they are developing to fight Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is one of the nation’s most feared mental disorders. The disease progressively robs individuals of memory and cognitive functioning, affecting four million people over the age of 65 nationally.

Alzheimer’s fatally struck former President Ronald Reagan, who recently died 10 years after being diagnosed with the illness. In addition, actor James Doohan of “Star Trek” fame was recently diagnosed with the beginning stages of the illness at age 84.

The Farber Institute for Neurosciences of Thomas Jefferson University is a multidisciplinary center initially focusing its efforts on basic and clinical research in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative disorders.
