Mitchell Machtay, M.D., Named Vice Chair of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Mitchell Machtay, M.D., has been named vice chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
and the Kimmel Cancer Center of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He has also been appointed the Walter J. Curran,
Jr., Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Machtay is
also director of clinical research for the department.
Dr. Machtay’s areas of expertise include head and neck cancer, lung cancer and tumors in or near the brain or spinal cord.
Dr. Machtay comes to Jefferson from the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, where he was associate professor of radiation
oncology.
Dr. Machtay has been a principal investigator in various studies conducted by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG),
an NCI-supported cooperative group, since 1994. He has served as deputy group chair since 2000.
He has won numerous honors and awards, and is a member of several professional societies, such as the American Society of
Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. He is the author of nearly 140 publications,
book chapters and abstracts, and has lectured widely.
Dr. Machtay earned a bachelor of science in engineering degree in chemical engineering in 1985 from Princeton University and
a doctor of medicine degree from New York University School of Medicine in 1989.
