A special series of workshops on lung cancer awareness are featured this fall in a program offered by the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. These special workshops will be offered in November during Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Approximately 173,770 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed this year, accounting for 13 percent of all new cancer cases. More than 87 percent of lung cancers are smoking related. While smoking cessation is a significant step in preventing lung cancer, it is only part of the solution. Recent advances are helping physicians detect the disease at earlier more treatable stages, and more effectively treat the disease after it is diagnosed.

The lung cancer awareness program will address many of these issues in the area of lung cancer prevention, screening, detection and treatment. In addition to hearing from experts in the field of detection and treatment, this program will feature a lung cancer survivor who will speak about her experience.
