Transplant Surgeon Carlo Ramirez, M.D., Joins Staff of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Transplant surgeon Carlo Gerardo B. Ramirez, M.D., has joined the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Dr. Ramirez completed a clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplant surgery at the T.E. Starzl Transplant Institute, University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Ramirez recently came to Jefferson after serving as chairman of the Department of Organ Transplantation at the National
Kidney and Transplant Institute in the Philippines. He was also the chief of the Division of Organ Transplantation in the
Department of Surgery at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Medical Center in Manila, where he
served as clinical associate professor of Surgery.
Dr. Ramirez, who is board certified in surgery, previously served as deputy director of the Department of Liver Transplantation
and Hepato-Biliary Surgery at the King Fahad National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
His clinical and research interests include liver and renal transplantation and non-heart beating donors.
He is an active member of several professional and scientific societies, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons,
International Liver Transplantation Society and the Philippine College of Surgeons. He was also a founding member of the Philippine
Society of Transplant Surgeons.
He has written more than 30 scientific articles and has delivered more than a dozen guest lectures.
Dr. Ramirez graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in Zoology from the University of the Philippines in 1981.
He received a doctor of medicine degree in 1985 from the University of the Philippines, College of Medicine, in Manila.
