Specially-Trained Cancer Surgeon Adam Berger, M.D., Joins Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Surgeon Adam Craig Berger, M.D., who has received special training in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, has joined
the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia.
Dr. Berger will have an academic appointment in the Department of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
Dr. Berger is interested in the multidisciplinary management of malignancies of the upper gastrointestinal tract including
esophageal, gastric and pancreatic cancers.
He has also received advanced training in the management of melanoma, sarcoma and breast cancers. He most recently completed
a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
Herbert Cohn, M.D., interim chair of Surgery, Jefferson, said he welcomed Dr. Berger and the specialized skills he brings
to the department.
“Dr. Berger will collaborate with other members of the Division of General Surgery to develop minimally invasive approaches
in the surgical management of esophageal, gastric and pancreatic malignancies,” Dr. Cohn said.
Dr. Berger’s research interests include molecular markers of prognosis and targeted therapies in esophageal, GE (gastroesophageal)
junction and gastric adenocarcinomas.
Active in clinical trials, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG) and the Radiation Therapy
Oncology Group (RTOG).
Dr. Berger completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
He has also served as a clinical associate in the surgery branch of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of
Health, in Bethesda, Md.
Dr. Berger received a doctor of medicine degree in 1995 from the New York University School of Medicine and a bachelor of
arts degree in 1991 from the University of Chicago.
He is the author of more than 30 publications, chapters, editorials, reviews and abstracts.
His professional and scientific society associate memberships include the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical
Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. He is an active member of the Association of Academic Surgery and
the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
