Cardiologist Alexis B. Sokil, M.D., Joins Jefferson Heart Institute
Alexis B. Sokil, M.D., has joined the Jefferson Heart Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He will also have
an academic appointment at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
Dr. Sokil joins Jefferson from Drexel University College of Medicine, where he was associate professor of Medicine and from
Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital, where he was director of the Non-Invasive Laboratory and the Echocardiography Laboratory.
He has held both positions since he began his career at the hospital in 1983.
He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1974 from Cornell University, where he graduated cum laude and with distinction,
and a doctor of medicine degree in 1978 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was a member of the national
medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha.
Dr. Sokil completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital in 1981. He went on to complete
a fellowship in cardiology in 1983 at George Washington University Hospital, Washington, D.C.
At the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital, he also served at various times as director of the Stress Laboratory, director
of the Coronary Care Unit and chief of service from 1999 to 2004.
A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Sokil is a member of many professional and scientific societies, including
the American Heart Association, where he serves on the Council on Clinical Cardiology and the Council on Basic Science, American
Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Delaware Valley Nuclear Cardiology Working Group, and
the Delaware Valley Cardiac Ultrasound Society, where he is a member of the steering committee.
Dr. Sokil is a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography and was formerly a reviewer
for the American Journal of Medicine.
At Drexel, he was instrumental in formulating and presenting the cardiology curriculum to medical students. He received several
teaching awards and was also recognized as one of “America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America
in 2003 and 2004.
Dr. Sokil has given presentations at national and regional meetings and has published on such diverse topics as arrhythmia
and atherosclerosis. In addition to Board Certification in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, he is also subspecialty
Board Certified in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
Active in his community, Dr. Sokil is a former director of the Merion Civic Association and active in the Merion Liberty Troop.
