Jefferson Researcher Receives the American Cancer Society Scientific Achievement Award
Renato Baserga, M.D., has received the 2004 Scientific Achievement Award from the American Cancer Society. The Scientific
Achievement Award is a prestigious award that is given annually to those who have made extraordinary efforts and achievements
to cancer research. Dr. Baserga accepted his award at the Southeast Region’s annual volunteer awards dinner held late last
year.
Dr. Baserga, who is professor of microbiology and immunology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in
Philadelphia and interim director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, made groundbreaking research accomplishments in
the medical field through his kinetic cell research in the mid 1950s, and was one of the first to publish cell kinetics of
a tumor in 1960. In addition to his research efforts, Dr. Baserga has also been an active editor and associate editor in several
scientific publications.
In recognizing Dr. Baserga’s accomplishments, the Society cited his more than five decades of “contributions in searching
for a cure for cancer. The American Cancer Society’s Scientific Achievement Award is the organization’s way of thanking him
for all his hard work in trying to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease.”
