A series of free, one-hour sessions, developed to teach women about their risk for breast cancer, is being offered at locations throughout Philadelphia.

The seminars are presented by the Division of Genetic and Preventive Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. Known as the RUBEE Project (Risk factors: Understanding Breast health through Enhanced Education), the seminars are funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Philadelphia affiliate.

"We are presenting these sessions to North and South Philadelphia to reach out to women who are at increased risk for developing breast cancer. Bringing these services directly to their community provides women convenience, a comfortable environment and accessible health-care services,” says Rosanne Iacono, RN.C., MSN, CRNP, nurse practitioner and RUBEE project director at Jefferson. “Early detection is the key to successfully treating breast cancer,” she says.

At each session, participants will learn to identify their breast cancer risks and gain a better understanding of risk factors. They will also learn about genetic testing and breast cancer genes, screening services and preventive measures. Information about obtaining clinical services such as mammograms will also be provided.
