Chair of Jefferson Otolaryngology Named Physician Director of Jefferson University Physicians Group
William M. Keane, M.D., Herbert Kean Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Jefferson
Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, has been named physician director of Jefferson University Physicians.
Jefferson University Physicians (JUP), a nonprofit supporting organization of Thomas Jefferson University, is a multi-specialty
physician practice consisting of the full time faculty of Jefferson Medical College. While providing the highest quality health
care to patients, JUP trains the physicians of the future and engages in numerous research endeavors that support the mission
of Thomas Jefferson University.
In his role as physician director, Dr. Keane will report to Thomas Nasca, M.D., dean, Jefferson Medical College, and be responsible
for the oversight of the Jefferson University Physicians practice plan and implementation of new initiatives for the clinical
practices. He will continue to serve as chair of the department of otolaryngology.
Dr. Keane is a nationally and internationally recognized head and neck surgeon and one of the nation’s leading experts on
the treatment of head and neck cancers.
While serving as department chair, Dr Keane has established Jefferson's Department of Otolaryngology as one of the preeminent
clinical care and residency training programs in the United States.
He has been awarded both the Certificate of Honor and the Distinguished Service Award by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery in recognition of his contributions to Education and Research.
Dr. Keane received a doctor of medicine degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in otolaryngology at
the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained as a member of the full time faculty until becoming the Herbert Kean Professor
and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at Jefferson Medical College in l99l.
