Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has been ranked as the top and only hospital in Philadelphia for orthopaedics, U.S.News & World Report indicated in their 2005 Best Hospitals survey.

Jefferson University Hospital was ranked 17th in the nation and the only medical center ranked in Philadelphia for orthopaedics. Jefferson Hospital, which includes the Rothman Institute at Jefferson, performs among the largest number of joint replacements in the city and nation.

U.S.News & World Report this year also ranked Jefferson University Hospital as among the best in the nation in five other specialties – rehabilitation medicine; digestive disorders; geriatrics; gynecology; and ear, nose and throat.

In addition, Wills Eye Hospital, which serves as the Department of Ophthalmology for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, again ranked as third in the nation and first in Philadelphia for ophthalmology.

Jefferson Hospital President and CEO Thomas J. Lewis said Jefferson and its staff are pleased to once again be listed among the top U.S. medical centers and again be recognized for specialized care, including orthopaedics.

“We are gratified that U.S.News & World Report has recognized Jefferson’s world-class expertise in orthopaedic procedures, as well as other specialties. This honor reflects our commitment to providing superior medical care to our patients,” Mr. Lewis said.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has major programs for heart disease, cancer treatment, neuroscience, high-risk childbirth, genetics, radiology, orthopaedics, digestive diseases and many other areas of medicine and surgery. It is one of only a few hospitals in the United States that is both a Level I Trauma Center and a federally designated regional spinal cord injury center. Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center is designated as a clinical cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the hospitals of the Jefferson Cancer Network offer free screenings for breast, skin and prostate cancers. There are several free support groups.

U.S.News and World Report has consistently ranked many of Jefferson's services as among the best in the nation. These include rehabilitation, cardiology/cardiac surgery, orthopaedics, digestive disorders (gastroenterology), geriatrics, gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, which are both based at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, otolaryngology - head and neck surgery, and urology.

In addition, Jefferson physicians have been named among the best doctors by Philadelphia Magazine and by Best Doctors in America.

Jefferson has been ranked among “The Top Hospitals In America” by Modern Maturity, AARP’s magazine for people over 50.

Most recently, Jefferson achieved certification as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

For eight years in a row, Jefferson University Hospital has been awarded the Consumer Choice Award by the National Research Corporation (NRC), for being an innovator and leader in health care in Philadelphia. In addition, Jefferson University Hospital was the recipient of the HealthGrades 2004 Distinguished Hospital Award for excellence.
