Surgeon Bernadette C. Profeta, M.D., has joined the Department of Surgery of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia.  She has also been named assistant professor of surgery, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Profeta most recently served as a general and laparoscopic surgeon at the Frankford Health System, Philadelphia.  Prior to that appointment, she was an instructor in surgery teaching minimally invasive mini-fellowship courses focusing on bariatrics, colectomy and ventral hernia repair at the Medical College of Virginia.

Her areas of expertise include advanced laparoscopic forgut, colon, solid organ, and bariatric procedures as well as general surgery.  Dr. Profeta has authored a number of abstracts and publications on laparoscopic gastric bypass and bariatric surgery.

While at the Medical College of Virginia, she completed a laparoscopic surgery fellowship.  Dr. Profeta also completed a general surgical internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was honored with the Goracci Teaching Award for Chief Resident, the Chief Resident Hands of a Surgeon Award and a Medical Student Teaching Award.

Dr. Profeta received a doctor of medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1997 and a bachelor of science degree in biology in 1991 from Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia.
