Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Receives Top Honor from American College of Surgeons
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia has received a three-year approval with commendation for its cancer program
from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, its highest possible recognition.
The Commission on Cancer approval is based on a number of factors, such as the ability to provide comprehensive state-of-the-art
services and equipment, a multidisciplinary, team approach for the coordination of cancer care, a cancer data management system,
or cancer registry, capable of recording and analyzing cancer trends by primary site, demographics, treatment and patient
outcomes and lifetime follow-up and extent of disease analysis.
“Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Kimmel Cancer Center are delighted to have received the highest possible rating
from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer,” says Richard Pestell, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Kimmel Cancer
Center at Jefferson and professor and chair of cancer biology at Jefferson Medical College.
“Dr. Charles Yeo, chair of surgery, Drs. Walter Curran and Neal Flomenberg and the entire cancer team at all levels of the
organization should be proud of this important accomplishment, providing the highest quality of care to our cancer patients
at Jefferson.”
“This is appropriate recognition of the level of clinical care and research expertise and achievement in a number of areas,”
notes Walter Curran Jr., M.D., professor and chair of radiation oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson
University and clinical director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. “We’ve received accreditation at the highest level
for the maximum time, meaning we’ve met and exceeded a benchmark in all areas surveyed. It’s a good measure of our ability
to have an effective clinical research program.”
