Inside the Criminal Mind --- Forensic Psychiatrist Addresses Diagnosis of Defendants at Jefferson’s 2006 Biele Lecture April

Robert L. Sadoff, M.D., will discuss “Competency: Criminal, Civil, and Professional” at the 2006 Albert M. Biele, M.D., Memorial
Lecture in Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Sadoff is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Director at the Center
for Studies in Social-Legal Psychiatry, and Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine.
The 28th annual Biele Lecture will be held Wednesday, April 26, at 11 a.m. in the DePalma Auditorium of Jefferson’s Foerderer
Pavilion Building, 1020 Sansom Street, Philadelphia.
Dr. Sadoff received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Minnesota in 1959 and completed his residency in
Psychiatry at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, from which he also received a Master of Science degree in Psychiatry in 1963.
He is board certified in psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, legal medicine and has added qualifications in forensic psychiatry
from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Sadoff is the author of more than 90 articles in medical and legal journals and of more than 30 book chapters. He has
authored, co-authored or edited seven books, including
Forensic Psychiatry: A Practical Guide for Lawyers and Psychiatrists and
Psychiatric Malpractice: Cases and Comments for Clinicians.
Dr. Sadoff has examined more than 8,000 individuals charged with crimes during the past 40 years and has testified for both
prosecution and defense in criminal cases in about 20 states and several federal jurisdictions. He has served as a consultant
to Norristown State Hospital, Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, Harrisburg State Hospital, Forensic Psychiatric Hospital of New
Jersey and the Philadelphia Prison System.
Dr. Sadoff is licensed in five states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, California and Minnesota. He has lectured
in nearly every state in the United States and in 12 countries around the world.
The Biele lectureship was created in 1979 to honor Dr. Albert M. Biele, an outstanding Jefferson physician, scholar and psychiatry
professor and friend to many at Jefferson. The lecture was endowed by the Biele family and members of the Jefferson Medical
College Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
The Biele Lecture committee is chaired by Karl Doghramji, M.D., professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Thomas Jefferson
University, and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
