New Chief Financial Officer Joins the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University
Richard W. Haldeman, MBA, has joined the Kimmel Cancer Center (KCC) at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia as its
new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). In this new position, Mr. Haldeman will financially integrate the research and clinical
functions of the organization. He will also serve as lead financial representative for KCC director Richard G. Pestell, M.D.,
Ph.D., in both of his roles as Vice President of Oncology Services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Associate Dean
for Cancer Programs at Thomas Jefferson University.
Mr. Haldeman joins Jefferson from the Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, where he was Assistant Director of
Finance since 1999. In that position, Mr. Haldeman was in charge of the annual budget for five divisions within the Institute:
Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, and Gynecologic Oncology. He was also responsible
for a $70 million operating budget for six departments including: Clinical Research, Pharmacy, Social Work, Affiliate Network
and Administration.
Prior to that position, Mr. Haldeman was an auditor at Deloitte and Touche LLP in Parsippany, N.J., specializing in the public
sector, from 1997 to 1998. He also was a grant officer at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., from 1998 to 1999, where
he was responsible for the auditing of federal, state, and private foundation grant funds.
Mr. Haldeman earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Arizona State University in 1992 and a bachelor of science
degree in accounting in 1997 from Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J. Mr. Haldeman also received his master of business
administration (MBA) in management from Fordham University in New York in 2006.
A Certified Public Accountant since 1999, Mr. Haldeman is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts
and of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Dr. Pestell praises Mr. Haldeman’s expertise in integrating the research and clinical operations needed to spur the Kimmel
Cancer Center’s financial growth. “The Kimmel Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

The Kimmel Cancer Center (KCC) at Jefferson is one of a select group of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers
in the nation. With more than 100 researchers in well-funded basic science programs in cell biology, signal transduction,
molecular biology and genetics, immunology and structural biology, developmental therapeutics, melanoma, leukemia/lymphoma,
breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and genitourinary cancer, the KCC also conducts a variety of initiatives in clinical
research, including programs in urologic cancer, prostate brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, targeted therapeutics,
clinical pharmacology, and cancer prevention and control.
