Charles J.Yeo, M.D., Samuel D. Gross Professor and Chair of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, has authored the latest (sixth) edition of Shackelford’s Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, considered to be an essential reference for general surgeons, surgical residents and gastroenterologists, with a special focus on alimentary tract diseases.

Dr. Yeo, as editor-in-chief of the textbook’s sixth edition, has worked with Elsevier to not only expand the topics in this new edition, but has made the text more user-friendly, paring down the textbook from five volumes to two. Moreover, the book is now done in full color, with expanded illustrations and diagrams. Additionally, the textbook now contains a CD-ROM which provides all the book’s illustrations to the readers. This textbook has served for more than four decades as the leading clinically oriented, encyclopedic review of surgical diseases that concern the alimentary tract. The last (fifth) edition was said to be “an indispensable reference for the anatomy, physiology, biology, practice, and history of abdominal surgery… there is no comparable text that is as comprehensive and focused on the alimentary tract," in a review in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The reference guide also:

  • Presents cutting-edge perspectives on what is hot in the field with help from a fresh, new editorial team
  • Highlights the latest technology and offers detailed information on key topics such as laparoscopic surgery, small molecule therapy and PET scans
  • Optimizes the clarity and function of each generously illustrated page with full-color images throughout

Dr. Yeo’s primary interests and research focus on pancreatic cancer, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery and alimentary tract surgery.  His work has focused on the evaluation and management of patients with unusual pancreatic disorders and with complex alimentary tract diseases and surgical intervention in patients with pancreatic cancer or acute or chronic pancreatitis. He previously served as the chief of the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was a Professor of Surgery and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he held an endowed chair as the John L. Cameron M.D. Professor of Alimentary Tract Diseases.

Shackelford’s Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (2007) is published by Elsevier and can be purchased at the Jefferson Medical and Health Science Bookstore, located at 1009 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, or through the book store’s web site at www.jefferson.edu/bookstore or through Elsevier’s web site at www.elsevierhealth.com.
