Charles J.Yeo, M.D., Samuel D.Gross Professor and Chair of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, recently received the 2006 Distinguished Physician Award from the Hellenic Medical Society of New York.

Dr. Yeo, who is Greek-American, was honored at the 70 th Annual Scholarship Gala (a dinner dance) during the medical society’s annual scholarship and scientific symposium weekend celebration earlier this month, attended by more than 300. The Jefferson chair was honored for his medical and surgical expertise, his commitment to scientific research and his strong Hellenic values.

Leading the scientific program on pancreatic disorders, Dr Yeo, a national expert, discussed p ancreatic diseases and surgical options for them. He is editor-in-chief of the latest (sixth) edition of Shackelford’s Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, considered to be an essential reference for general surgeons, surgical residents and gastroenterologists, with a special focus on alimentary tract diseases.

Dr. Yeo’s primary interests and research focus on pancreatic cancer, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery and alimentary tract surgery.  His work has focused on the evaluation and management of patients with unusual pancreatic disorders and with complex alimentary tract diseases and surgical intervention in patients with pancreatic cancer oracute or chronic pancreatitis. He previously served as the chief of the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was a Professor of Surgery and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he held an endowed chair as the John L. Cameron M.D. Professor of Alimentary Tract Diseases.
