John G. Reiling, Ph.D, MHA, MBA, a nationally renowned expert in healthcare facility safety design, and president and CEO of Safe by Designwill give the 16th annual Dr. Raymond C. Grandon Lecture at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Reiling will discuss "Patient Safety: The Impact of Facility Design" during his presentation at noon, May 3, 2007, in the DePalma Auditorium of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, South11th Street between Walnut and Sansom Streets. Following his lecture, Dr. Reiling will respond to questions from a panel of physicians and health care experts.

In 2003, Mr. Reiling oversaw an impressive project to improve patient safety at St. Joseph’s with the construction of a new $55 million facility. His building design, which included window blinds that reduced the breeding of germs, slip-proof floors and soundproof walls, has served as a model for other hospitals.

He subsequently went on to create a safety design plan for the Boca Raton Community Hospital’s new $700 million facility in Florida.

Recognized as one of the “50 Health Care Leaders for the 21st Century” by the American Hospital Association, Dr. Reilinghas more than 30 years of experience in healthcare administration in operation of health systems, physician groups and in consulting. He previously served as the president and chief executive of SynergyHealth Inc. and St. Joseph's Hospital in West Bend, Wisconsin.

He is an adjunct member of the faculty of the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. Dr. Reiling has been the recipient of the Meritorious award from the group Management Association in 1997.

Raymond C. Grandon, M.D., for whom the lecture series is named, earned the doctor of medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1945.  Dr. Grandon entered private practice as a solo practitioner.  An internist with a special interest in cardiovascular disease, Dr. Grandon was responsible for the first televised heart operation in the United States.  He was also a clinical investigator of cardio-active drugs and helped to coordinate the nation’s first commercially successful cardiac rehabilitation program.

The Grandon lecture is sponsored by the Department of Health Policy, Jefferson.  The department, under the direction of David Nash, M.D., MBA, the Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor and Chair of Health Policy, develops long-term strategies to prepare healthcare providers for the challenges of a dynamic healthcare environment. The department serves as a key contributor to the education and research programs of Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson Medical College.
