Joel Yager, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair for Education and Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, a well-recognized expert in academic psychiatry will present “The Practice of Psychiatry in the 21st Century: Implications for Psychiatric Education,” at the 2007 Albert M. Biele, M.D. Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University.

The 29th annual Biele Lecture will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, 2007, in the DePalma Auditorium of Jefferson’s Thompson Building, 1020 Sansom St., Philadelphia.                  

Named Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dr. Yager has long experience in the administration of successful mental health training programs. He is co-investigator on current research and training grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Dr. Yager has also conducted considerable research on depression and anxiety disorders in primary care settings, with a focus on increasing the ability of primary care physicians to recognize and treat these disorders.

He is founding editor of Eating Disorders Review and Eating Disorders Today and is an Associate Editor of Journal Watch for Psychiatry, published by the New England Journal of Medicine.        

He has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Psychiatry, the Archives of General Psychiatry and Academic Psychiatry, and currently serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Psychotherapy, International Journal of Eating Disorders, Eating Disorders: the Journal of Prevention and Treatment, Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic and the Harvard Review of Psychiatry. 

He has published more than 250 articles and chapters and has edited eight books in the field of psychiatry. 

The Biele lectureship was created in 1979 to honor Dr. Albert M. Biele, an outstanding Jefferson physician, scholar and psychiatry professor and friend to many at Jefferson. The lecture was endowed by the Biele family and members of the Jefferson Medical College Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.

The Biele Lecture committee is chaired by Karl Doghramji, M.D., professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Thomas Jefferson University, and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
