Jefferson’s Urology Chair on National Men's Magazine’s List of Top Physicians for the 21st Century Man
Men’s Health Magazine has named Leonard Gomella, M.D., FACS, Bernard Godwin Professor of Prostate Cancer and Chair of Urology at Thomas Jefferson
University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to its first annual list of physicians who have the “knowledge, the experience
and the tools to maintain and repair the 21st century man.”
Dr. Gomella, associate director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, was acknowledged in the national magazine’s April
2007 edition as one of the top 20 urologists and one of the top 160 doctors for men’s health in the United States in the magazine’s
special report, “America’s Top Doctors for Men.”
The criterion for inclusion in this Top Doctors listing involves surveys from physicians and medical leadership of top hospitals
to determine among other criterion, whom they would consult if a family member had a condition that required specialty consultation.

Recognized as an expert in the field of laparoscopy and urologic oncology, Dr. Gomella pioneered the multidisciplinary approach
to prostate cancer patient care, contributing to the design and implementation of multiple national and international clinical
trials for prostate cancer and led the clinical team that first identified a new molecular prostate cancer micro-metastasis
blood test.
Dr. Gomella is involved in both basic science and clinical research in the development of new diagnostic techniques and treatments
for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer through Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center. Dr. Gomella's team was first to use RT-PCR
to detect micrometastasis in patients with prostate cancer. He serves as Director of Clinical Affairs for the Kimmel Cancer
Center and Urology Chair for the Radiation Therapy and Oncology Group (RTOG). Dr. Gomella is also recognized as an expert
in urologic laparoscopy, having initiated the program at Jefferson in 1990.
In addition to having given more than 400 presentations at local, national and international meetings, he has written more
than 250 papers, book chapters and monographs in the field of urology and has served as member of the editorial board of the
investigative section of the Journal of Urology, as co-editor-in-chief of Techniques in Urology, and serves on the board of Urologic Oncology and the Journal of Laparoendoscopic Surgery. He isa consultant to numerous journals in the field of urology and oncology and in 2006 was appointed Associate Editor of
the Canadian Journal of Urology.
Dr. Gomella has authored and edited more than 40 books for medical students, house officers, and practicing physicians, many
of which have been translated into foreign languages. He is the editor of the “5 Minute Urology Consult” and co-editor of “Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery,” the field’s first color atlas. Currently, he is the laparoscopy editor for Glenn’s Urologic Surgeryandseries editor for McGraw-Hill’s “On Call” residentseries.
His book, Recovering From Prostate Cancer,was the first book for the public dedicated to this topic. In the field of medicine,
Dr. Gomella is known for the Clinician's Pocket Reference, now in its 11th edition, a widely used reference for medical students and health care providers.
He has been recognized for many years in Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors for Cancerand Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Doctors for urologic oncology and prostate cancer.
In 2000, the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Cancer Society awarded him a "Volunteer Achievement Award"and an “NCI Achievement
Award.” In 2005, he was elected President of the mid-atlantic section of the American Urologic Association.
