Jennersville Regional Hospital in West Grove, Pa., has joined the Jefferson Cancer Network (JCN), announced officials from both institutions recently.

“Jennersville Regional Hospital is an outstanding addition to the Jefferson Cancer Network,” says network director Walter J. Curran Jr., M.D., deputy director of clinical science at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson in Philadelphia. “Jennersville has a proven commitment to clinical trials research. It’s shown the importance for patients to have access to cutting edge clinical studies while being close to home, and we look forward to the staff’s participation and involvement in network trials.”

“We are pleased to be associated with such a prestigious and leading healthcare organization,” states Jennersville CEO Barry Michael. “This affiliation brings benefits to our patients that can only come from an academic medical center including access to the expertise and research of the Kimmel Cancer Center.”

Jennersville Regional Hospital first established a cancer program in 2000 to offer patients quality cancer care and access to clinical trials close to home. “With a growing number of people affected by cancer, it is only natural for community-based hospitals such as Jennersville to have cancer care as an essential part of its services,” notes Mr. Michael.  “What is unusual is the exceptional level of care provided at Jennersville Regional Hospital – one of the smallest facilities in the region.”

Approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Jennersville Regional Hospital was the only Pennsylvania recipient of the Commission’s 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award and was among the top six percent of surveyed hospitals in the nation during the year.

“While we’re certainly not the largest program in the Chester County region, we have proven that we are top-notch,” says Mr. Michael. “By joining the Jefferson Cancer Network, we are building upon a vital service that our community has come to rely on within a few short years.”

Medical Oncologist James Lebedda, M.D., agrees. “In many cases cancer is becoming a chronic disease as modern medical science has helped improve mortality rates.” Dr. Lebedda serves as Chairman of the Jennersville Cancer Committee, the multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals who guide the program. “Therefore, it is crucial that patients find a local, quality resource for cancer care as they manage this complex disease for the long-term,” Dr. Lebedda continues. “Jennersville Regional Hospital has become that important source for many living in southern Chester County.”

Jennersville Regional Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic services and in-patient oncology care, medical oncology, outpatient surgery and chemotherapy, pain management, home care and hospice services as well as support and educational programs. The program has quickly grown since its inception, serving more than a thousand individuals from the region.

The Jefferson Cancer Network is a consortium of institutions dedicated to improving cancer care and increasing clinical research. It supports the cancer programs of its members through education, information, research and cancer program development. Jefferson Oncology Group (JOG), a cooperative program to enhance clinical and translational cancer research, including clinical trial development. The Kimmel Cancer Center is a member of several national cancer cooperative research groups as well, including the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
