Trauma Surgeon Pankaj H. Patel M.D., Joins Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

Surgeon Pankaj H. Patel, M.D., FACS, who specializes in trauma and general surgery, has joined the Department of Surgery of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has also been named assistant professor of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Patel most recently served as an attending surgeon at York Hospital in York, Pa. and Christiana Care Hospital in Newark, DE., where he also served as associate trauma director of  Christiana’s Level 1 Trauma Center. He was also clinical assistant professor of Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey.

Board certified in surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Patel is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. 

The trauma surgeon completed a residency in general surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and an internship in general surgery at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif. Dr. Patel also completed a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. 

While serving in U.S. Navy, Dr. Patel was a lieutenant in the medical corps and completed the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program. He also received two navy commendations.

Dr. Patel received a doctor of medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1991, graduating cum laude, and a bachelor of science degree in biology in 1989 from Penn State University, also graduating cum laude while enrolled in the Penn State-Jefferson Six-Year Accelerated Medical Program.
