Benny Weksler, M.D., Joins the Department of Surgery at Jefferson
Benny Weksler, M.D., an accomplished thoracic surgeon, recently joined the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital, and was also named an assistant professor at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Weksler
specializes in thoracic surgical oncology, especially procedures for lung and esophageal cancer, as well as several different
types of minimally invasive chest procedures.
Dr. Weksler received his medical degree in 1987 from the Medical School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Prior
to joining Jefferson, he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at The Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute
of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh. From 1995-1997, Dr. Weksler was a cardiothoracic surgery fellow
(thoracic track) at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in New York, New York.
He also completed residency in the Department of Surgery at the New York Medical College/Lincoln Medical Center in Bronx,
New York (1988-91 and 1993-94); and was named chief resident from 1994-1995. From 1991-93, he served as surgery research
fellow in the Thoracic Oncology/Surgical Metabolism Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center in New York, New
York.
Dr. Weksler brings a wealth of clinical and administrative experience, having spent many working years in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. Dr. Weksler served as chief of staff and thoracic surgery chief from 2000-2002 at Rede D’Or Hospitals; and as chief
of thoracic surgery at Hospital Barra D’Or from 1997-99. Between 2002 and 2007 he was active in the private practice of surgery
in Brazil.
Dr. Weksler is also an accomplished surgical educator. Before joining Jefferson, he was a clinical instructor at the University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to this he spent a year (1999-2000) as an assistant professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic
Surgery at Albert Einstein Medical College; a year as clinical instructor in surgery at Cornell Medical Center (1996-97);
and two years as a clinical instructor in Surgery at New York Medical College (1994-96). He is board certified by the American
Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. In 2001, Dr. Weksler earned an Executive Master of Business
Administration degree from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil (a program in association with Vanderbilt University and
Lyon Business School).
Dr. Weksler resides in Philadelphia.
