Akhil K. Das, M.D., Joins the Department of Urology at Jefferson
Akhil K. Das, M.D., recently joined the Department of Urology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), and was also
named assistant professor of Urology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Das specializes in
female urology and laser treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate).
Dr. Das received his medical degree from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1991. He earned a
bachelor of science degree in computer science from Rutgers University in 1985. Dr. Das completed a surgical residency from
1991-1993 in the Department of Surgery, and a urology residency from 1993-1997 at TJUH. He served as chief resident in the
Department of Urology from 1996-1997. After his residency, Dr. Das went on to complete an endourology fellowship, with a
focus on minimally invasive treatments for female voiding dysfunction, with world renowned urologist Dr. Peter Gilling in
Tauranga, New Zealand.
Before returning to Jefferson, Dr. Das served as assistant professor of Urology at the New York Medical College in Valhalla,
New York from 1998-2000. While at the New York Medical College he was appointed to director of Neurourology. From 2000-2008
Dr. Das held appointments at different institutions in medically underserved areas of New Mexico. He worked as an attending
physician for Northeastern Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico (2000-2006); Los Alamos Medical Center in Los Alamos
(2004-2008); and the Physician Medical Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico (2007-2008).
Dr. Das is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He has been a member of the American Medical Association since 1994 and a member of the American Urological Society since
1996. Dr. Das has also been a Member of Society of Endourology since 1999. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Endourology, has been invited to present more than 25 lectures and has authored five book chapters and multiple journal articles.
